The Unfortunates

February 23

Joe's Pub

Doors at 9PM
Show at 9:30PM

Following a thrilling debut at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and in advance of its production in San Francisco at ACT, be one of the first New Yorkers to experience a one hour concert version of the new musical “The Unfortunates.”

The two hallmarks of the Bill Rauch era — audacious new works and a heightened emphasis on musicals — come together intriguingly in this bluesy, darkly comic romp, directed with infectious energy by Shana Cooper. A funky fever-dream of mortal fear and the longing for salvation, “The Unfortunates” takes its narrative DNA from the classic “St. James Infirmary Blues.” The score emphasizes the common lineage of blues, early jazz, rock, soul and hip-hop. And the writing finds its strength in creating a pack of witty, colorful revelers amid a world collapsing into darkness.  -Marty Hughley, The Oregonian
