"Jopek' s voice is like a drug I could have taken all night" - Fest (Scotland, 2014)
"Anna is original, unique, different. She' s brave, she 's modest, she 's open. She' s a great musician." -Pat Metheny
Anna Maria Jopek (AMJ), a unique voice in world music, a composer, singer, and arranger with an impressive carier, has sold one million records and collaborated with the most outstanding musicians, including Pat Metheny, Bobbi Mc Ferrin, Ivan Lins, Youssou N'Dour, Makoto Ozone and Richard Bona among others. From Toronto to London, from Berlin to Tokyo, she gives around one hundred concerts each year (in venues such as the Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall, Blue Note Tokyo, the Queen Elizabeth Hall and the Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv).
Anna Maria is a classically trained pianist who graduated from the Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw, Poland. After completing her diploma she decided not to play Mozart concertos anymore and traded philharmonic halls for small, smoky clubs and theatres. She has sold nearly one million albums in Poland alone and has won every prestigious Polish music award.
AMJ has been faithful to Polish musical tradition since her very first album and throughout her solo career. She has created her own original sound which flickers with jazz, pop, folk music and poetry, all joined together with her musicality and timbre of her voice. Of her own music, AMJ asks ... please do not file my music under jazz. Nor under pop, folk&. I embrace a lot of influences. Jazz is by far the most important in its freedom, its harmony and its sense of time, but I was brought up with the old Polish folk songs. So I'm kind of rooted in all these Slavic sounds.
AMJ will perform with a small band in New York City- such performances give her the greatest narrative freedom. The trio on stage are virtuoso musicians. Knowing the dynamics and range of AMJ s voice we are in for a musical journey between irresistible gentle ballads and explosions of Slavic temperament. The program consists of AMJ's compositions, her favorite folk themes, and above all, dialogue with Joe' s Pub audience.
Joining AMJ on stage:
Pedro Nazaruk - vocals, Polish folk instruments
Marek Napiorkowski - acoustic guitar
