Slanty Eyed Mama: DisOrientalism

Warning: Strong Language. Political Commentary. Hello Kitty

Comedy, theatrical rock n’ roll and lyrical spoken-word from one of New York's most celebrated comedians and a classical virtuoso turned electric violin rocker.  #Comedy   #Asian   #ElectricViolin   #Ramen

Slanty Eyed Mama is two good Asian girls gone bad-assed: Juilliard graduates, iconoclasts, two- time Smithsonian featured artists, Award winning festival darlings. This killer performance art duo is fueled by the electric violin licks of Lyris Hung* (currently touring with The Indigo Girls and founder of the progressive metal band Hung) and the comedy of classical actor turned performance artist and stand-up comic Kate Rigg** (Fox’s Family Guy, New Amsterdam, Comedy Central Presents, NBC Late Friday)

Slanty Eyed Mama have been featured on PBS, LOGO-TV, NPR, and Comedy Central, and have been invited twice to the Smithsonian Institute to showcase their signature outrageous music and words on everything from massage sandals to bowl cuts to Hello Kitty in postcolonial political thought.  Other notable appearances include LA Grand Performances, The Perth International Festival, The Edinburgh International Festival, The Vancouver Comedy Festival, and many more.

DISORIENTALISM is a “Best of the Best show” culled from their full length theatrical concerts: "Birth of a nASIAN", "Happy Lucky Golden Tofu Panda Dragon Good Time Fun Fun Show"(also an Award Winning Independent Film directed by Carrie Preston) and "Zombie Asian Moms."

It’s  a mashup  of stand up comedy, electric violin, punk rock spoken word and characters. It’s about race and represent-Asian: identity politics, bowl cuts, Chinatown, nail salon paradoxes, Hello Kitty hats, gay pokemons, math nerds, street vendors, those gold cats with waving arms.

The lineup also features songs like “ME LOVE YOU LONG TIME”, “WHITE GIRL PROBLEMS”, “BOWL CUT BLUES” and “MEDICAL SCHOOL”.

May is Asian Pacific Heritage Month (and also National Masturbation Month), so come tune in and get turned with to a blast of inspiring music and words about race, gender, and sexuality with the lyricism, rap, and wild performance art of Slanty Eyed Mama.

“Cool, Provocative – Asian American Theater Weekly
“Stunning, a killer combination of words, music and noise” – Anchorage Daily News
“This team’s outrageous political and racial humor is too good to be missed.” – Boston Globe
“Silly, provocative entertainment from a perspective rarely given play in our selectively cutting-edge culture” – Huffington Post
“Machine Gun timing and perfect comic delivery” – Washington Post

**Kate Rigg is a stand up comic who was the comedy correspondent on “The Dr. Phil Show” for 3 seasons and created the hit show “Dance Your Ass” off for Oxygen TV. She has done stand-up on Showtime, Comedy Central, NBC Late Friday, PBS, CTV, City-TV, Sex TV (for a special on Dragon Ladies). She is also an accomplished actor and writer who is partial to dirty jokes.

*Lyris Hung has played electric violin with Bono, Jay-Z, Trans Siberian Orchestra, Toshi Reagon, Suzanne Vega, Bryan Adams, and now tours regularly with the Indigo Girls. She is the lead artist in the Death Metal band Hung. Because she plays that violin like it’s a hardcore killer queen electric guitar axe.  Except when she’s with folk music lesbians. Then it’s more like a fiddle.
