Gorgeous old-world sounds collide with modernity in sui generis Brooklyn-based band, Barbez. Drawing on elements of European folksong, post-war classical, and experimental rock, the songs of Barbez embrace both haunting stillness and explosive frenzy. With: Dan Kaufman (guitar), Pamelia Stickney (theremin), Danny Tunick (marimba, vibraphone), Peter Hess (clarinet, bass clarinet), Catherine McCrae (violin), Peter Lettre (bass), and John Bollinger (drums).
"The music of Barbez conjures an imaginary place full of narrow, crooked streets that are paved with ancient, damp cobblestones. The Brooklyn-based ensemble looks to Eastern Europe for inspiration and its expansive rock draws on such composers as Brecht, Schnittke, and Satie. But Barbez is firmly lodged in the present. Its original compositions, written mostly by the guitarist and band leader Dan Kaufman, capture the angst, joy, and strangeness of life in the twenty-first century.”—The New Yorker
Ka Baird, a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist living in Brooklyn, will be performing a solo piano improvisation. In 2015, she released a record of her solo piano improvisations called Sun Sun Think Shadow on the Drag City label. In addition to her solo work, Ka continues to co-lead the legendary psychedelic-folk group, Spires That in the Sunset Rise.
"Her piano approach brings to mind the playful, spacious qualities of Emahoy Tsegue-Maryam Guebrou, the unrestraint of Cecil Taylor, the rolling arpeggiations of Alice Coltrane, and the ghostliness of Arvo Pärt." —Perfect Wave
