MICHA: Jovencita

Joe's Pub

July 11

Doors at 6PM
Show at 7PM

MICHA is the project of vocalist, songwriter, musical theater composer and actor Michelle J. Rodriguez. With a voice that is “clear and compelling” and a sound that features “flourishes of bolero, bossa nova and even jazz” (Chicago Tribune), MICHA has captivated audiences at Joe's Pub (NYC), the Hideout, Steppenwolf and Salonathon in Chicago with her stunning vulnerability onstage. Beloved by NPR’s All Songs Considered team, MICHA became a finalist for NPR’s 2018 Tiny Desk Contest with her song “Nena Nena Nena,” a celebration of the power of Latinx femme friendship. In her show “Jovencita,” MICHA will take you on a visionary journey through her musings on young Latinx womanhood and the power of love over fear, all with powerful femme-centered vibes.

Ms. Rodriguez starred in her original bluegrass/folk musical, East o', West o'! at ANTFest at Ars Nova in 2017, which earned her a mention in The New Yorker. Other musicals include the geriatric coming-of-age story Betty White: The Musical! (Immediate Theatre, book by Jimmy Grzelak), cross-cultural kids-of-immigrants tale JIRAN (book, music, lyrics) and Chicago crime thriller Bibliophile (reading at Victory Gardens produced by El Semillero, book and lyrics co-written by Jose Nateras), and ROKERA, a musical about three young women of color who start a rock band in Brooklyn (book by Tatiana Suárez Pico). She also recently composed music for the play AZUL by Christina Quintana (INK’d Festival, Playwrights’ Realm). Her musical theater work has been supported by residencies and grants from the Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts, Salonathon and Camp Wandawega, SPACE at Ryder Farm, New York Theater Workshop and a forthcoming summer residency at the Chicago Performance Lab at the University of Chicago. Theatre performance credits include The Fly Honey Show (The Inconvenience), La Havana Madrid (lead role u/s, Teatro Vista/Steppenwolf/Goodman Theater) (Vocal Director for Goodman run), Ava in East o’, West o’ (Ars Nova), and early iterations of Hundred Days by The Bengsons.
