The Lisa Quiroz Emerging Writers Groups’ Public Studio presents the first act of THE LOOPHOLE, an epic new musical-in-progress by Public Theater #BARS Alumni and Dramatists Guild Foundation Fellows Zeniba Britt (book and bars) and Jay Adana (music and lyrics).
It is 1863 and America is at war with itself. Just outside of Atlanta, Polly, a biracial black cartographer, spends her days working with her white father making and selling maps. Her father has set up his family’s former plantation as the perfect place to hide his gifted daughter, but her lover Acker wants her to leave for an untethered life out west. As the war closes in, Polly must choose to protect her work and privilege or fight for love and freedom with an all black battalion of the Union Army.
Fresh from Good Grief and Homecoming Queen, Awoye Timpo directs this folk/rap alternative history of a still resonant civil war.

POWER
Sunday, February 24
When another Black life is lost to police brutality, the media often focuses on death and hashtags. But what about the stories of those who survived? Artist and activist Patrisse Cullors (co-founder of Black Lives Matter) had this in mind when she created POWER: From the Mouths of the Occupied in 2015. A documentary performance piece, POWER focuses on the unseen and unheard experiences of those in the Black community facing criminalization and state violence on an every day basis. Join Public Forum as we frame excerpts from POWER with a conversation between Cullors, legendary activist Angela Davis, and actor/youth organizer Yara Shahidi ("grown-ish").

Sturridge, in his third collaboration with Tony and Olivier Award winner Simon Stephens (Heisenberg, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time), performs SEA WALL, an astonishing monologue about love and the human need to know the unknowable.
Gyllenhaal continues his artistic collaboration with Olivier Award-nominated playwright Nick Payne (Constellations, If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet) in A LIFE, an emotional examination of how sons become fathers and the transformative power of love.
Directed by Carrie Cracknell (A Doll’s House, The Deep Blue Sea), this heart-filled exploration of the meaning of life is a must-see evening of dramatic storytelling at its best.
