Outlaw country’s iconic first lady Jessi Colter met guitarist/producer Lenny Kaye while he was spending time with her husband Waylon Jennings working on his now-legendary autobiography. While at their house, Kaye heard Colter at the piano singing striking, impromptu versions of the Psalms “forming simple chords and expressing melodies as they came to her,” and he was forever changed. He knew there and then he wanted to record her and recreate this unique moment for the ages, and over the next 10 years the two set out to do just that. Released March 24, THE PSALMS album finds Colter and Kaye sharing a timeless spiritual and musical experience reflected in these eternal “songs of praise,” as ancient as they are contemporary.
Join Jessi Colter and Lenny Kaye as they perform selections from THE PSALMS and as well as Jessi’s iconic canon of outlaw country classics.
"The Psalms offers listeners the sound of one woman's praise and supplications — and not just any woman, but one of country's most distinctive vocalists.” - NPR
“The profound communion on this album is at once fearlessly modern and firmly humbled: strict, lyric readings of 12 Psalms in dynamic vocal and piano improvisations at a crossroads of old-time Nashville, outlaw country, wide-open church and avant pop. This is bold, seeking rapture, given on bended knee." - MOJO - 4 stars
